Dick: I didn’t know that; thanks. St Patrick would certainly be high on the list of saints combatting feminism. I don’t know; maybe Joan of Arc (for Roman Catholics) would be higher. I can’t see her putting up with Gloria Steinem for long.

Interestingly, the snakes miracle is interpreted to mean pagans or some such thing by the modern church — a pagan sect who was represented by a serpent. It is easily conceivable that in modern times St Patrick would be responsible for the end of feminism. After all, somebody’s got to do it.

[1] Sad to spoil a legend. True, Ireland has no snakes, but that’s more due to cold weather ending 15,000 years ago, and the North Sea than St. Patrick.
