How can you afford internet access if you don’t have a job?
My real life friends know this, but I live with my best friend Matt, who owns his own house and has his own broadband internet account that I use, as do our other two roommates. Why can’t you get a job?
There are several reasons for this. One, I’m in so much god awful pain the majority of the time that it’s difficult to always keep up with the aforementioned housework, laundry and cooking, let alone the stress of working. Before this started to get really bad, I used to work 60-70 hours a week.

Two, one doctor, one specialist and one specialized surgeon have mandated I can’t work. If I were to go against that mandate and find work regardless (which, I’ve been tempted to do, because I hate not having money of my own and constantly having to ask Matt for money for my medications and such), then DDS would automatically deny my SSI/SSDI appeal, which would mean it would have to go to court, which would take anywhere from 1-2 years.

I thought doctors weren’t allowed to refuse treatment of a patient if they can’t pay if the situation is life or death?
This is true, legally they’re not able to do so. Welcome to the circle of hell I’m in. The Chiari Malformation is not, at present time, a life-threatening condition. The cranial lesions, on the other hand, have been. In January of this year, I was actually advised by my neurologist to “get my affairs in order” because they figured, based on the accelerated formation of new lesions and the fact that the lesions had started to bleed, I was going to die within 3-6 months.

At that point in time, because of the bleeding, I wasn’t considered a good surgical candidate. We tried gamma knife radiation, which helped some.

Since then, medications have been changed and I’ve done my own research and supplement the medications I take with homeopathic measures. I have a degree in Eastern Bodyworks, so I know a lot about homeopathic medicine and also have several very good friends who practice in varying fields of Eastern Bodyworks that have given me even more advice and insight.

Because of all of that, the lesions have, thankfully, stopped bleeding and new lesion growth has significantly slowed down. This means I’m not considered “life-threatened” right now. There is, however, no guarantee that this situation will stay the same indefinitely.

Now, if I were to stop the medications and the alternative medical practices, I could force a life or death situation in which surgery would be imminent. The downside to this is, if the lesions are massively bleeding again, the chances of me surviving the surgery would drastically reduce. The surgeon wants to deal with the Chiari first and then address the lesionectomy.

What about family?
The only thing I’m going to say on this matter is that my family doesn’t have the resources to help out with this. Aside from that, it’s really nobody’s business.

If you’re a college student, why don’t you get insurance through your university?
I’m not sure how this one got started, but I’m not a college student.

Even though health care in the US sucks, most medical organizations still help the uninsured and under insured, right?
Yes, they do. I have several major health groups that are giving me assistance. The only one that employs neurosurgeons is OHSU, which is the medical school/teaching hospital in my state. Maybe this is how the college student thing got started? Anyway, the hospital itself is giving me 100% after I completed their financial screening process.

However, the maximum discount they’re able to work out for me with medical providers employed by them is 50%. Neurosurgeons? Not cheap. And I myself am still baffled by this, considering the financial screening process I had to go through, but the neurosurgeon will not do the surgery without an 80% deposit on the balance after the 50% discount is applied.

This deposit will range anywhere from $1500-$5000, I won’t know the exact number until after my next appointment on October 12th.
The surgery, as I’m to understand it, is going to involve opening the base of my skull to unrestrict CSF flow to the spine. There is also the possibility it would involve detachment at the base my spine.

Again, I won’t know which method we’re going with until my appointment on the 12th. Though I tend to be a “prepare for the worse, hope for the best” person by nature, I can’t help but strongly believe that my expected financial contribution is going to be on the latter end of the range scale I was given.

How do I know this isn’t a big scam to get money to buy [insert luxury item here]?
Well, I guess you can’t really know that, regardless of what information I can and am willing to provide you. You can, however, go to my personal journal here and click on the list of tags I provide. There are entries going back to December of last year about this situation.

I guess if you really wanted to believe I’m a fraud, you could argue I created those entries and just waited an appropriate amount of time to launch project download.

Also, I’ve been asked for my PayPal information more than once and in each case, I’ve sent the person to the entry so they could click on those tags to make sure they had no doubt I wasn’t a fraud.

Why not contact the media about this?
Simply put, because I don’t want to be the poster child for Medicaid reform in Oregon. I’ve spoken at symposiums, addressing members of state legislature about my condition and the hell I’ve gone through just to get basic medical treatment, let alone access to specialists.

Contacting the media in an attempt to rally more troops to my cause is something I fear will have more negative retribution than positive. I currently receive financial assistance from two major medical groups (OHSU and Providence) and I’m afraid of going on the news and having whatever I say be colored in a negative light to any organization I’m involved with currently.

How do I know this isn’t a scam to infect peoples’ computers with a nasty virus?
First off, I don’t know how to write a virus. Second, it has been debunked by someone with far more knowledge of these matters here. While a virus bad enough to wipe everyone’s computers could be the same size of the text document I’ve uploaded, it is, as of now, not possible for a virus to be executed from a text file.

Again, I don’t know much about virus’ other than I hate them and think those who do write them suck major ass. All the computers in the house are protected by AVG’s Internet Security software, which does a daily check of our computers for any virus/spyware/malware.

When I uploaded the first document and then the five mirrors, each time I ran another scan right before uploading, just to be sure I wasn’t infected with anything nasty and passing it on. Furthermore, more than one person has downloaded the text file and reported there is no virus attached, you can see the comments here.

What happens if you don’t hit the 5 million mark by November?
