I’d also say that socialism is an underlying factor in our cultural problems. It’s been creeping in for the past several decades, a mentality that instead of working to get what you want in life, all you need to do is get free handouts from the government. Those who benefit from this mentality do whatever they can in order to keep the status quo. How many politicians are carrying on about how people in poverty are stuck in poverty, with no way out, and yet they offer no real solutions beyond that which will maintain the situation.
I saw something on the news a few weeks ago where a guy, just graduated from college, decided to put the American dream to the test. He randomly picked a city that he had no connections in, only brought the clothes on his back, a sleeping bag, and $25 in his pocket, and without relying on his college degree went to see if he could make it. He spent about 3 months in a homeless shelter, but within the year he had saved enough money to afford rent in a modest apartment, and had the means to build himself up.
I’m not saying that necessarily everyone can do what he did, barring certain life circumstances, but the idea of pride in being able to stand on your own two feet seems to be dissappearing from our society.

I guess I see the decline of american culture as being largely due to rampant materialism. Some of its promoted by the media, but I think a lot of it is when people just go out on Sunday drives and see nice neighborhoods, and wondering why they dont live there. Housing prices have gone up way over inflation–this must be supported by consumer demand, and this demand I think is because people are willing to sink more of their money into property to keep themselves and significant others happy in a time of continually rising expectations.

Ive met a lot of immigrant women in my work environment who are always unhappy–unhappy with their husbands, unhappy with the money they make, despite the fact they live reasonably comfortable lives. So even new immigrants are corrupted by the american over-inflated dreams.

And yes, obesity is a problem. Sure, I would love to consider women as potential partners based only on personality, but it just doesn’t work. Obesity just limits the number of potential dateable women out there–and because of the morbidity it generates, I suspect it may be the major driver of the health-care crises in america. We live in a spoiled-lazy-ass culture. We are fucked.

The media is dominated by secular Jews and homosexuals with fucktons of money and as little sense as females - I think most of us here(who matter) agree it’s a powerful arm of this corrupt order that must be wiped out with our other enemies.

If I may say so, I think the present difficulties between men and women can be traced to several sources. One thing many miss is the Anglo-American media, which has raised expectations of relationships and life itself to absurd levels. Back in 17th Century England, say, most people would not be bombarded with expectations of marrying supermodels, being forever young, living in a Hollywood mansion, and the like. In fact, most people would only ever meet plain looking people like themselves. Consequently, folks would just marry a plain-ish person in the village, breed, and live quite contentedly. Now, things are very different. Most of what we see in the media is wildly unrepresentative of real experience - it is all millionaire celebrities, yachts and beautiful people. And this has raised mass expectations way beyond most people’s realities. Most people do not ’see’ viable mates around them, because their expectations are unrealistic. It is no surprise the West has plummeting birthrates, as the West is the world’s most media-saturated region. Also, the decline of mass religious belief means many invest relationships with too much psychic detritus when, after all, a mate is just someone to breed with, not some kind of religion.

There is something wrong with our modern culture in a very deep sense. I am trying to say these problems run deeper than feminism, although that is a problem too. Many conservative intellectuals consider our civilization to be fucked, to put it bluntly. Which it will be, unless it starts to reproduce itself.

@proudatheist- it sounds like our view are consistent with equity-feminism, which I am all for–I am for equal rights for the sexes. I dont think equity-feminism is evil. But radical feminism in my view is wrong.

@agents-Yes! I guess in a women’s eyes, I am acting disloyal and shallow, and this site has given me the voice to act this way. But, I really think women need to know whats attractive to a man. As we discussed before, men are visually inclined–men want to feel his partner is beautiful in his eyes, and women want to feel that they are beautiful; it’s a good partnership here. But when women let themselves go and become overweight viragos in a relationship then it is seem by men as a betrayal. Certainly men can become fat as well, and women may see this as a betrayal, or a man may betray the relationship in other ways. What I’m getting at is the danger of a woman’s expecting “unconditional love”–no matter how bad it gets, the woman feeling entitled. This puts a lot of stress on the relationship.

Ok, the ‘ravaged by pregnancy” thing is a little extreme, and after about 6-9 months on average they’re usually sleeping through most of the night anyway. Not that you snap back like a rubber band or anything, but eating sensibly and exercise are just as important as they were before you had kids. Exercise can even be incorporated into everyday activities, such as playtime, running errands, etc. (I swear I spent about 30 minutes running circles in the backyard with my toddler today. Seriously, they never get tired!!!) Your actions (mom and dad) also teach your kids good lifestyle habits. Having kids shouldn’t be an excuse to blimp out.
My point being, on both sides of the relationship it’s important to take care of yourself, both for personal health reasons, and for keeping the relationship healthy. I’m not talking extremes here, but “for better or worse” shouldn’t be an excuse to see how far you can get on “worse”.

When a woman has had her body ravaged by pregnancy and had very little sleep - having to wake up and breastfeed throughout the night, she has barely 5 minutes to herself throughout the day because of her demanding offspring it is ridiculous for you to expect her to put on make-up, do her hair and get dressed up for her man…like some hideous 1950’s stepford wife relying on valium to stop her topping herself.

I would argue that the female entitlement to find their partner attractive has been under attack for millenia.. having to have sex with men much older than them through forced marriage etc. Men are now getting grumpy that in the past couple of decades women are saying - hang on: Men have looked like shit for years and still expect to get laid. Also, nobody I know wants to control men, at least I dont think so. All I ask for when I am older is the right to control myself… not for men, or anybody els to control me. I honestly WANT men to have their own personalitys. Who would want a pansey for a boyfriend? I disagree. There are loads of women out there who want to partner up, but you have to look in the right places. You won’t find them tarted up on the dancefloor. Agents: there was recently a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy Sciences, USA. Basically what the researches found was that before a speed dating event, women and men suggested they wanted in a mate was somebody like themselves–the PC based theory of attraction. After the event, the researches found that men tended to want to date women above a certain level of attractiveness, and that women based there selections on their perceived level of attractivness compared to other women (reference are ealier skirmish). In other words, the hotter they thought they were, the more selective they became.

I believe its difficult for men and women to break the thrall of evolutionary-honed instinct. Feminism is frustrating–men feel that women want to fool us with the like attacts like hypothesis but we know better. I think men are angry in part because many men feel that if women want to keep the instinctual basis of attraction then they also better want to stay in the kitchen. I dont feel this way, and Im still refining my views in this issue.

Yeah… but I think there is a confusion between the desire for social status and attraction.

It’s not possible to show how women and men, away from the pressure that society puts on them to chose a mate would chose their loins.

That survey only represents people who are too insecure to stick by what their loins tell them. They are thinking… How would I introduce this person to my mother, my friends, my colleagues. It’s not just sexual attraction those stats represent, but social pressure to conform.
Until these societal pressures are gone you cannot get a realistic impression of what people find attractive.
