Most men complain about the downside, whether we work OR stay at home at work. We can’t win either way. When I had a paycheck and took care of most chores, we argued over limited time together and division of chores and then when I was laid off from my job last year and now take care of everything in the home 100%, my husband is mad because now I have no money. I can’t win. I do not buy anything except for absolute necessities.

I’ve even gone w/o necessary medical/dental care and wear old clothes around the house b/c he complains about the co-pays and also I do not have money to buy new clothing that are a necessity and not frivolous. He won’t even buy me new bras to replace the ones that are now a few yrs old but he has over 20 undershirts. He won’t buy me new underwear but he has 20 pairs of new briefs and I am wearing old underwear. He says if I do not have a paycheck I can’t have it. Yet I enable him after work to do absolutely nothing b/c it’s all done … by me. He has his weekends all free and clear, everything is done … by me. This is exactly why I had a career. I knew if I didn’t have a decent paycheck he would become disrespectful and that’s why women who do not want to work outside the home have a career anyway. This way the men can’t treat us like a child making us beg for an allowance and reduce us to pleading. Also, if the man gets abusive we can leave IF we have a good job/career. Before the early 1980’s, most women were stuck. I can tell you it’s a real bad, soul destroying feeling when he has all the money and therefore power, and you have none … zero. How would you feel if you were home with kids working hard all day in a non-paying capacity? Either way, we just can’t win.
