Excuse Me, Waiter. I’ve Got A Woman in my Technology.

The reason 20th century women have entered technology in shrew-nosed flocks isn’t because “oppression” ended. Socrates and Magellan were killed because they were interested in science. That’s the worst kind of oppression: oppression of men.

Death by hemlock and spear is also more oppression than any woman has ever been subject to.

Women love baking and cleaning. How is making them do it being oppressive? It’s like sending a disobedient child to his room with a crate of Twinkies, a keg of Cherry Coke, and more video games then God.

At some point in the past twenty years, men decided it would be hilarious to tell women smarts were attractive. The mirror over my bed isn’t a magic mirror. It doesn’t reflect cleverness. Don’t tell that to women in technology though! It would break their nerdy little hearts.

Women in the 50’s were dumber than dirt. If you gave a 50’s cavewoman access to a modern washing machine, she would probably try to cram her baby into it because it “looked like fun” and that way she could “wash the kid and the clothes at the same time”. Irresponsible to say the least.

The selection of remotes on display in any random household media room would melt the mind of a 50’s woman.

That’s actually the most brilliant thing man has ever done: manventing the relay-race, HAL-deactivating clusterfuck that is the modern television remote control. It’s getting to the point that if I want to watch TV in a strange man’s house, I am forced to grab remotes at random and press buttons in an exaggeratedly humorous way until the man of the house intervenes.

‘That’s how women do it,’ I say. Of course I’m right.

Today, women are given a choice in role models. They can act like grown up versions of themselves, like Paris Hilton or Hilary Clinton. In other words, drunken amateur pornographers who don’t have the self-respect or dignity to kick their cheating men to the curb — also Hilary Clinton has cankles. Or little girls can follow the role models men have created for them. Dora the Explorer works. Kim Possible also works. Not all women are Mexicans — unfortunately.

Helper monkeys are great, but they don’t cost you your house when you trade them in for a Roomba.

Modern women are entering technology because men told them it was sexy. Their brains still don’t function as poorly as they never did. That hasn’t changed. No woman invented algebra. But women did invent the Girl Scouts, an organization whose main source of revenue is guilting and beguiling family, friends, and shoppers into buying their shitty cookies. Only two or three of Girl Scout cookies are any good. The rest are shit. They know that, but they pad your order with them anyway like they’re doing you a favor.

If I wanted any Shortbreads, I probably would have put a fucking mark in the box. I’m a man. I can read.

Thanks to us men, women can now calculate how much sexier having a “brain” makes them. Unfortunately, all their calculations take the form of obnoxious proselytizing, annoying self-promotion, and deceptive recruitment practices.

Women in technology are like the KKK. They’re always looking for new members.

@Sarah, if you are genuinely what you say you are, I invite you to peruse my blog. You’ll be treated fairly and decently in the comments. Unlike here, no one, including I, may make any negative reference to you as a woman. (Indeed, for my sins, most of my commenters are female). We try and discuss science, religion, politics and gender issues intelligently. We try.

Now, you’ll forgive me I trust for meeting your post in the way you made it?

    Sarah said:

This website is utterly bizarre. Categorising ALL women as technologically illiterate is preposterous. Since I attended Cambridge University, In England, I happen to have many exceptionally intellectual female acquaintances that excel the mental capabilities of every man I have ever met.

All right, Sarah. You protest against extremist comparisons and then toss one right back. Well done. The consistency and logic that we have come to expect from female posters on this site.

Of course there are intelligent women. Brilliant, even.

One of the posters on my own blog has a PhD in physics. She’s highly intelligent, albeit quirky.

But the very fact that you’ve risen to the bait suggests a disturbing degree of technological (and even social) ineptitude.

And the fact that you’ve chosen to toss out the assertion that you’ve never met a man smarter than the collection of women you’ve been acquainted with suggests either you are very bad at perceiving things, or you are very poorly educated with a limited range of acquaintances, even though you are at one of the world’s great universities.

And this, my dear girl (I’d say my dear boy, in avuncular rather than homosexual fashion, were you male and asserting the same things — call me mildly patronizing, but please, not sexist in this), is risible.

Furthermore, for your information, I have a first class honours degree in Computer Science, along with a master’s degree.

Not a good choice. Ada Lovelace was an amazing woman, but “computer science”? It’s waxed and waned, but suffice to say, it’s a discipline in search of intellectual validation. Your posts here do nothing to support such a case.

[My background? I've a degree in computer engineering from a well-ranked North American University and a PhD in History from a similarly well-ranked NA University. I am a professor at a well-regarded NA University. (Possibly not as good as Cambridge, but better, I think, than Oxford). Call it top 20 or so globally.]

Endeavour to inform me now that we women ‘know nothing about technology’. I can most undoubtedly assure you, the fool who wrote this article, that I, personally, have greater knowledge concerning technology.

That I rather doubt, for I am one of Dick Masterson’s official technical advisors. You are welcome to cross wits with me if you wish, dear lady, but I have doubts that you will prevail.

Make no mistake: I genuinely applaud your achievements. While your (type of) degree has been nibbled at indefinitely, it is never-the-less a significant achievement from a world class university.

The master’s degree, I’m not so applauding. Those are generally offered as consolation prizes for people who failed to execute a PhD. Indeed, if memory serves, Oxford used to grant an automatic masters if you remained out of the hands of the police for two years and paid five pounds. Perhaps I misremember.

What was your thesis on? What do you do now?

In any event, good luck to you Sarah.

Madam, since you pride yourself on your intellectual ability, why do you commit the flaws of the women before you? First off, why do you write this website off before even reading the content of the site. To be able to argue or debate on any issue or further qualify your claim that this site is “bizarre”, shouldnt you go further than the site name? You do what all women do. You see something that displeases you and throw a fit.

@ Wolfe, I am currently a freshman at a college in Singapore. I was wondering what area of history do you touch on? This question has been bugging me since I read that you were a history professor. History is my favourite subject though I do not seem to be able to exhibit much skill in it in college. The days in secondary school have passed by too quickly when I easily topped the level. Anyway, I have some queries and doubts on the themes which I am doing now, most notably “International History” - Cold War and “SouthEast Asian History”.. are you an expert? If you are, I was hoping if I can ask you for some comments on my essays by perhaps giving some pointers on the necessary directions to follow.

I understand, however, that you may lack the time or simply find it a chore to go through as cumbersome as essay as mine. Nonetheless, I thank you for your time.

Precisely. Besides, using religion to base your premise on appeals not to logic but in my opinion, emotions and feelings. Truth be told, it can be said that women are inferior because they are only an appendage of men; thereby acquiring only a small percentile of men’s intelligence and abilities which has been sadly polluted.

I’m what we would now call an “old school” (ha, I slay me) historian. The discipline has moved towards archival work; I am more of an analytical historian. I am a military historian. Doubly unpopular.

I focus on two main areas; the Cold War, and, to a limited degree, the so-called “Birth of the Modern” period of post-Napoleonic history. My focus there is primarily on Europe, South Africa, Australia, America, Japan and Canada.

I am quite weak on south-east Asian (or Asian in general) history, with few exceptions. (I’ve studied the Chinese Civil War and the Korean War closely). I’ve done some study of the Malaysian war against communism and the split of Singapore, but my advice there would, frankly, be mediocre at best.

History is my favourite subject though I do not seem to be able to exhibit much skill in it in college.

I will not correct essays for you. I will cheerfully ask you questions about your essays, and offer comments under certain circumstances. You may post them on my website in the forums and send me a personal message on the same forums. I will not comment on essays sent to me via email or via PM. i.e., if you want comments, it needs to be posted publicly. If you wish to learn, and submit your essays prior to posting them with me, then no one can question your integrity.

I want to make it as clear as possible that I delight in helping others learn, but I will not help anyone cheat, not that I suggest you ask such a thing of me. If you really wish to learn, submit your essays to your profs and THEN post them on my site and I will comment and question. I will not give you direct corrections, and, if I feel you are taking advantage of any comments I make I will withhold all future comments.

Not, of course, that you would do such a thing.

If you are, I was hoping if I can ask you for some comments on my essays by perhaps giving some pointers on the necessary directions to follow.

I like the topic, I am faintly troubled by the “pointers on the necessary directions to follow”. It could be an Eastern/Western difference, but “the necessary directions to follow” do not exist.

I understand, however, that you may lack the time or simply find it a chore to go through as cumbersome as essay as mine.

I read posts from women on mabtw.com. I am sure your essay(s) will be far, far less of a chore. Indeed, I look foward to the same. But they must be posted and time-stamped on my forums and I must comment publicly. Again, I’m sure you desire learning. But I cannot and will not be a party to anything that would even hint at academic fraud as I’m sure you understand — and as I’m sure you would not wish to be.

    Best,

@ Wolfe: I have no problems with posting my essays publicly. I am not an academic fraud or cheat and I have no intention to. In my college which is similar to those throughout Singapore, tests are what count towards your final grade. Its unlike the American system whereby assignments are allowed to be taken home, graded and counted in your final grade. The Asian system works differently, more focused on tests and grades to gauge a student’s academic ability. That said, I would like to assure you, that I have no intention of cheating but will follow your advise in posting on a public forum.

No problem. I have been tasked with numerous readings such as Gaddis, Oliver Edwards, Young and Kent etc. It would be good and useful for me to seek your advise as I plow through those very thick books. Not that the books bore me though I believe that much can be discussed about them and other issues pertaining to the Cold War. (I would focus on the Cold War in any questions I may have since that is your area of expertise).

    Sincerely, thanks

  9. wolfe Says:

@MansVoice Excellent! Glad to hear that’s the way it works. Yes, the Singaporean system is somewhat different. In the West we place much more value (at times unwisely) on essays.

Register and post away. If necessary, I’ll make it a forum only you and I can post in (though others read).

  10. MansVoice Says:

Yes, perhaps you can evaluate the effectiveness of the different systems. While the Asian system is admittedly more rigid and pedantic, I feel it grooms people to their choice career. However, I am as always, respectful of the American/Western educational system because they bred the inventors, innovators and thinkers of tomorrow. It is said “When the yanks are good, they are brilliant”. Most true.

Shall sign up and post in the “Wolfe Den” if I have any queries of any sorts. Thanks once again.

It’s said that the USA has the worst educational system of K-18 of any developed country on the planet. Probably true. Yet it’s also said we have one of the best in undergrad/grad. True… for now.

We cannot coast on this. I think our whole educational system is a mess, and yes, I think there is value in a mixture of essays and rigorous rote testing.

The West places far too much value on “feel good” rubbish at the moment.

I don’t like the compromises that Lee Kwan Yew made with freedom, but I reluctantly admire the results. Very reluctantly.

Post away even if you’ve no queries. Would be good to have more men there. Let a thousand flowers bloom, only genuinely, not that Chinese Marxist crap.

  14. MansVoice Says:

The compromises? Singapore isnt a police state like most western countries like to believe it is. Take the recent IMF meeting held here. There was no riots, no vandalism, no terrorism of any kind. Sorry, I felt I had to stress that. The censorship of the press is used to promote racial harmony and prevent religious wars. We had a real bad bout of racial riots before - the 1960s and we dont wish to see the return of those dark and gloomy days of suspicion and mistrust of thy’s neighbour.

But I see where you are getting at. Political freedom? Yes, we dont criticise our political leaders. We work issues out through live debates or talks. I am of the belief that criticism is fair and just but in the western countries, they seem to run it down to some circus where journalist write to sell papers and turn politics into a dramafest.

Singapore isnt a police state like most western countries like to believe it is. Take the recent IMF meeting held here. There was no riots, no vandalism, no terrorism of any kind.

    That’s the point, laddie.

You argue that it’s not a police state because there were no troubles. Everywhere IMF meetings occur in the west, there are such things. Either Singaporeans are magically more brilliant, or, well, there’s a lot of good police work.

The censorship of the press is used to promote racial harmony

And who gets to criticize the family of Lee Kwan Yew?

Singapore is fantastic. On so many levels. It was widely felt to not have a chance at survival when Malaya/Malaysia separated. LKY despaired, briefly.

They stuck to their guns, like men, and they rocked. It was a rather spectacular example (IMHO) of the British succeeding at parts and failing centrally.

But come on. Not a police state? Of course it’s a police state compared to the West.

I chatted to a friend in uh… let’s just say the Singaporean Government.

He described the process my passport and id went through when I flew in for a mere XX hours. (The fact that it was over X number of hours alone as enough to trigger an investigation, no, I’m not going to help by revealing how many hours that was.)

I’m down with Singapore, but compared to we foolish freebooting westerners? Yep, policed state. (Not Police state, granted)

    In any event, best,
